OHD & University of Michigan-Flint partner to bring Cultural Competence Training for Healthcare Providers in March

The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) Office of Health Disparities Reduction (OHD) in partnership with the University of Michigan-Flint (UMF) will offer an in-person training especially designed for health care providers (emphasis on nurses) to enhance cultural competencies and develop skills in meeting the needs of diverse patients, groups and communities. 

It is well known that a culturally competent health care workforce is needed to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce health disparities.  It is crucial for health care providers to communicate with their patients and understand what constitutes illness within the framework of their cultures in order to mutually decide upon care that is evidence based and culturally appropriate.

Time:  Two session available: Morning 8:00 am to 12:00 pm or Afternoon 1:00 to 5:00 pm

Local Grocery Stores Present New Eating Smart with Diabetes Store Tours

Salt Lake City, UT (February 25, 2012) – A new diabetes education and nutrition program is being offer for FREE to interested patients and caregivers at select Associated Food Stores along the Wasatch Front.

These in-store events provide people impacted by diabetes with a unique opportunity to learn how to better manage the disease and how to shop for menu choices to improve health.

Each 90-minute class is led by a specially trained Diabetes Care Pharmacists and a Registered Dietician. The class begins with a pharmacist-led presentation regarding diabetes, proper testing, and medication adherence. The Registered Dietician teaches food options, portion sizes, and nutrition label decoding. The majority of the class is spent walking through the store.

According the Registered Dietician, Harmony Mitchell, “This class is different than your typical diabetes education class because it is interactive. We teach in a hands-on environment. We have the advantage of offering a grocery store shipping experience to reinforce nutrition training.”

The Multilingual Library Gets a Face Lift

The Office of Health Disparities Multilingual Library has been redesigned as a dynamic website. You can search for health brochures, websites and media by language, topic or target population, and narrow your results if necessary. The library includes resources in 41 languages.

Are you looking for resources especially designed for a specific racial group, such as African Americans or American Indians, even though these people may prefer English?  You can find such materials by searching by target population.  Other target population categories include low literacy readers, low income, rural area, and  age categories like children or elderly.

Chicano/a Scholarship Fund available at the University of Utah

In 1973, in honor of the ideals and principles of equal opportunity and social justice in education, a group of Chicana/os comprised of members from the community and University of Utah students, staff, and faculty initiated the Chicana/o Scholarship Fund at the University of Utah. Committed to all students of diversity who promote the cultural pride and tradition of the Chicana/o-Latina/o community, the Chicana/o Scholarship Fund recognizes and assists students in their undergraduate and/or graduate education endeavors. The Chicana/o Scholarship Fund awards a total of eight scholarships in an academic year. Four scholarships in the amount of $2500 are awarded to graduating high school seniors who will be entering their freshman year at the University of Utah. Three scholarships in the amount of $2000 are awarded to undergraduate students at the University of Utah. One scholarship in the amount of $1500 is awarded to graduate students at the University of Utah.

Eligible students are selected on the basis of family background, life challenges, scholastic effort and involvement in community activities that promote cultural pride and strengthen the Chicana/o-Latina/o community. Financial need may strongly influence the final selection.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be:

• Admitted to the University of Utah as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student,

• Eligible to receive federal financial aid, and

• A resident of the state of Utah (minimum of 5 years).

To apply for the scholarship, applicants must submit:

• The Chicana/o Scholarship Fund Application (with personal statement),

• Official academic transcripts,

• Two letters of recommendation, and

• Copy of financial aid letter.
